How Do I Start To Learn French

October 3, 2019 by Ana Martín Leave a Comment

how to start learning french

Deciding to learn a foreign language is a great decision, especially one as rich and beautiful as French. But once you’ve decided to learn it, the next question you often find yourself asking is HOW do I start to learn French? Let’s take a look at some of the best ways you can get started with your French language learning journey.

Start Speaking French As Soon As Possible

Some language learners swear by the speak from day one method and although this works for some people it doesn’t work for everyone. However, starting to speak as soon as possible will make a huge difference to your French. The sooner you start speaking the sooner you’ll see your French improve. Of course you actually need to learn some French words before you’ll be able to start speaking!

Use A Website Like Italki To Find French Language Partners

A great way to start speaking French is to use websites where you can find language partners to help you learn. There are lots of websites available where you can find someone who is learning your language and organise language exchanges with them. Italki is a great resource to do this with.

Learn As Much Vocab As Quickly As Possible

Download an app like memrise or anki and download a course for the 1000 most commonly spoken French words. The sooner you can learn these words the faster you’ll be able to speak French. Flashcards can be fun and interactive and you may enjoy the challenge of learning as many new words as possible. Once you’ve learnt the words you’ll be ready to go and start speaking.

Buy A Great French Textbook

A French textbook is a fantastic resource to help you improve your French. Textbooks can be great because they help you to go through grammar points and the finer details of the language without needing a French tutor. We couldn’t recommend French textbooks more and the best thing is you only really need one so you don’t need to spend a lot of money.

Immerse Yourself In French Culture

Part of the fun of learning a foreign language is to enjoy the culture and this means movies, TV series, music and more. Don’t be afraid to start reading in French or really getting involved in the politics and history of the countries. This can be a way for you to get a really deep enjoyment out of the French language.

Find A French Class Near You

Now this one can be up for debate, but if you’re the type of person who learns well in a classroom environment then finding a French class might be the right step for you. That way you’ll progress with the class and you’ll also be motivated to learn as you’ve already paid for the class and so you have to go.

Is a class necessary or can you learn French on your own? This is something that is quite often debated in the language learning world. There is no reason that you shouldn’t be able to learn French without a teacher and a classroom but you may want to consider talking to other people in French so you can practise your French conversation skills.
