Just because you’re not in an English speaking country or even taking an English class doesn’t mean that you can’t improve your English speaking skills. There are lots of things you can do from home to help improve your English skills (some even without a partner!)
You Can Find An English Speaking Partner Online
The first thing you can do to improve your English speaking skills at home is to find a language partner online. You don’t even need to leave the house to find someone to practise with, simply look on the internet.
There are lots of apps and websites where you can search for someone else learning English to practise with them or you can find someone learning your language and organise a language exchange with them.
Conversation Exchange and Italki are great for this.
Keep An English Speaking Diary
Keeping a diary is a great way to improve your writing skills, so why not keep a verbal diary to improve your speaking skills. You can use the camera on your laptop to record yourself speaking. Simply set yourself a time every day, sit down for ten minutes and talk to the camera about your day, or thoughts or something interesting you saw on the news.
The best thing about this is that if you keep the recordings you can actually see your progress over time from the first diary entry you do to the most recent one.
Talk English To Yourself
Now most people might think this is crazy but talking to yourself is a fantastic way to improve your English speaking ability if you’re in the house. If you want to practise speaking but there’s no one to talk to then there’s nothing wrong with talking to yourself.
If you’re not sure what to say then start off by talking about what you’re doing, for example if you’re making a drink you can say “I’m putting the kettle on and waiting for the water to boil.” Just doing this will help with your English fluency when you speak.
Try Singing In English
Instead of singing along to songs in your own language why not make the effort to learn some lyrics in English. Find some great English songs and sing along to them. If you do this the sounds in English will become much more familiar to you. And it will help you experience more English and American culture.
Ask Your Family Members To Speak English At Home
If you have family members or a partner who are also looking to improve their English then why not ask if they would like to try speaking English at home. They don’t have to do this all the time but at least one day a week or for one hour after school of work. If you did this and only spoke English during those times then yours and their English would improve dramatically. It might be difficult at first but if you can bring yourselves to do this it’ll definitely be worth it!
Hopefully some of these methods will be useful for you and hopefully we have been able to show you that you can learn to speak English at home, you just might need to work a little bit harder. You won’t be able to improve your English speaking skills fast, or at least as fast as if you were out and about in an English speaking world, but you should see improvements.
