How Can I Improve My English Speaking Skills Fast?

December 5, 2019 by Ana Martín Leave a Comment

how can i improve my english speaking skills fast

It can take a long time to improve your English speaking skills and they’re not going to increase overnight. However, there are things that you can do to help improve your English speaking skills as quickly as possible.

The biggest thing that you’re going to have to do to improve quickly is to speak much more. There’s no quick fix answer, if you want to improve in a short amount of time you have to speak more English. You need to speak English for several hours every single day.

Here are some ways to speak more.

If You’re In An English Speaking Country

If you’re lucky enough to be in an English speaking country then you need to try and have as many interactions in English in a day as possible. When you buy something from a shop try and extend the length of the conversation you have, ask the cashier about their day.

If you’re in a restaurant ask the waiter to recommend a wine for you so you get more opportunity to have a conversation. If you push these interactions during the day, you’ll realise you’re speaking a lot more English.

If You’re Learning From Your Own Country

  • Organise a language exchange online for a minimum of an hour a day. If you talk to a native English speaker for one hour a day then your English speaking skills will improve very quickly. You’ll see a big difference over a series of months.
  • Improve your writing and your speaking will follow. If you start to keep a diary in English where you write every single day then your command over the English language will improve and this will reflect in your speaking.

Other Tips To Improve Your Spoken English Quickly

Here are some tips you can use while you’re actually speaking.

  • Try to vary what you speak about. If you talk about the same thing every single day then your ability to talk about that will increase but your general English speaking skills will probably stay the same. Try to make the effort to talk about art one week and politics the next. This will improve your general ability to use English rather than just your competency in speaking about one topic.
  • Work on your accent. One of the things that can make the difference between someone sounding like they have a great level of English and someone sounding like they don’t is the strength of their accent. If you want to see noticeable changes quickly then you might want to consider working on your accent. If you can tone it down to sound more neutral or adopt ways of saying English words like a native would then your English will sound better more quickly without you actually having to do that much work.

Hopefully these tips have helped you. Although you won’t be able to improve your English overnight, these are some things you can do to improve your speaking skills as quickly as possible but our advice remains the same. The best thing you can do is to increase the amount of time you spend speaking English and this will improve your confidence with speaking English as well.

How Can I Improve My Confidence With English?

December 5, 2019 by Ana Martín Leave a Comment

how can i improve my confidence with english

It’s one thing to be able to speak English and have a working understanding of the language, it’s another to be able to speak English with confidence. Everyone wants to improve their English confidence and there are some very simple things you can do to achieve this, you just need to change your way of thinking.

The two biggest things you can do to improve your confidence with English are to learn that making mistakes are ok and to use English more. This may seem simple but if you can master these two skills, you’ll notice your English confidence improving dramatically.

So let’s take a look at these two ideas separately.

Making Mistakes While Speaking English Is Ok

Confidence doesn’t necessarily link to ability. There are people whose English is quite learn, who speak very confidently and others who have quite advanced English but aren’t that confident using it.

A big difference between these two people is learning that it’s ok to make mistakes when speaking a foreign language. If you’re still able to communicate effectively and the other person can understand you, then a mistake isn’t as big a deal as you might think it is. Mistakes are a natural part of the language learning process and if you don’t make mistakes, you can’t learn.

If you wait until your English is perfect before you start using it then you’ll never be able to speak English. If instead you realise that other people are nervous and also make mistakes and that this is ok you’ll notice your confidence improving straight away.

Start noticing the mistakes that other people make when speaking English or your language and realise that you don’t mind if they make a mistake so people also don’t mind if you make a mistake. Hopefully with this realisation your English confidence should improve and with that you will be able to improve your English speaking skills at the same time.

Speak And Use English As Much As Possible

The next thing you have to do to improve your English confidence is to use it more. This might seem obvious but it’s true. There’s no easy fix where one day you’ll feel more confident with it, in order to do so you need to be more comfortable with the language and if you want to achieve this then you’re going to have to use English a lot more.

If you don’t live somewhere where you can use it for day to day transactions, then you will have to find ways to fit more English into your life. This can be achieved through:

  • Watching more TV and movies in English
  • Reading more in English
  • Finding an English class
  • Talking to people in English online
  • Immersing your life in English

If you can engage in the language as much as possible then you should notice an increase in your confidence as you get more used to using the learn and it feels more comfortable to converse and live in English.

Why not take a look at some of the best apps for improving English fluency.

What Is The Best App For Improving English Fluency?

December 5, 2019 by Ana Martín Leave a Comment

what is the best app for improving english fluency

There are lots of great apps that you can use to improve your English fluency but apps will often practise different skills, but when we talk about fluency we tend to think about speaking the language. So our recommendation is based on the best app for improving English speaking fluency.

As we are big believers of the idea that in order to improve fluency you have to talk more, our number one app choice is ‘HelloTalk.’

What Is HelloTalk

HelloTalk is a great app that you can use to find people to practise different language with. You can use it to search for people in your local area who would like to practise or more generally people online. Then you can start chats with them and either organise to meet up, arrange a Skype conversation or simply use the app to talk to them like you would a penpal.

With the app you can search for other people who want to practise English and practise with them, or you can search for people who speak English but want to learn your language and arrange a language exchange with them where you speak English for half of the time and their language for the other half of the time.

Other Features Of HelloTalk

  • Ability to correct other people’s messages. When someone sends you a message you can correct what they’ve said and send it back to them to help them improve.
  • Sharing moments. You can post moments to the worldwide community and engage in discussions. With this you can share ideas or ask questions about language learning.
  • Be part of a community. The app is a perfect way to connect people from all over the world with the shared joy of learning a foreign language. With HelloTalk you’re not just using an app to learn, you’re joining a much bigger online community full of other language learners.

So Why We think HelloTalk Is The Best App For Improving Fluency

There are of course other apps to help you learn English. There are ones dedicated to learning vocab, improving your grammar and much more but if you’re looking to improve your fluency then the thing you need to do more of is speaking and HelloTalk is the perfect app for this.

Instead of having to go to the USA or the UK to practise English you simply open the app and can find people to practise with immediately.

The only downside of the app is that it takes a lot of self motivation. As you’re not doing exercises and getting lingots like on Duolingo, you need to motivate yourself to find language partners and to make the effort to start a conversation. But if you’re someone who is easily self motivated then this is the app for you.

It’s also a great way to make learning English more social rather than just functional which makes language learning more fun for everyone.

So in order to improve your fluency in English, download the HelloTalk app as soon as possible and start speaking right away.

How Can I Practise Fluency In English

December 5, 2019 by Ana Martín Leave a Comment

how can i practise fluency in english

Improving fluency in English is something that comes with a lot of time and practise but that can have a huge influence on your level of competency in the language. Improving fluency can mean that people perceive your level of English to be even higher than it is.

But to improve fluency in English takes a lot of time and basically more practise actually speaking.

Start Speaking English A Lot More

It might sound obvious but the best way to improve fluency in English is to speak more. The more you speak the more fluently you will be able to communicate. If you don’t have a partner find one, if you can’t find a partner then just start speaking to yourself. But no matter what you do choose to do, you need to speak a lot more. As you speak more you’ll find it becoming easier and easier and you’ll communicate with a lot more fluidity.

Forget About Mistakes

Waiting to be able to speak perfectly is something that is going to slow your fluency down rather than speed it up. If you’re going to improve your fluency in English then you don’t want to concentrate too heavily on speaking perfectly and instead think about communicating. As your English improves, your mistakes will as well. But forgetting about them for now and instead concentrating is the perfect way to improve your English speaking fluency.

Download An App To Help You Improve Fluency

There are lots of apps that you can use to help improve your fluency. The most useful ones to do this are ones that encourage you to speak and write in English as much as possible. The best app to practise fluency in English is HelloTalk. This is because HelloTalk can be used to find people to practise English with. And the best way to improve fluency is to speak as often as possible.

Try English Tongue Twisters

A tongue twister is a phrase or rhyme in English that involves lots of similar sounds which are difficult to say. The better you get at tongue twisters, the more easily you will be able to produce English sounds and the easier you’ll be able to speak with more fluidity. Doing something more difficult than just speaking can be a great way to get you over speaking barriers.

Hopefully these tips will be useful in increasing your fluency, which should help to improve English speaking skills more generally as well.

If you’ve found this useful then make sure you check out our article on how to improve English speaking skills at home.

How Can I Improve My English Speaking Skills At Home

December 5, 2019 by Ana Martín Leave a Comment

how can i improve my english speaking skills at home

Just because you’re not in an English speaking country or even taking an English class doesn’t mean that you can’t improve your English speaking skills. There are lots of things you can do from home to help improve your English skills (some even without a partner!)

You Can Find An English Speaking Partner Online

The first thing you can do to improve your English speaking skills at home is to find a language partner online. You don’t even need to leave the house to find someone to practise with, simply look on the internet.

There are lots of apps and websites where you can search for someone else learning English to practise with them or you can find someone learning your language and organise a language exchange with them.

Conversation Exchange and Italki are great for this.

Keep An English Speaking Diary

Keeping a diary is a great way to improve your writing skills, so why not keep a verbal diary to improve your speaking skills. You can use the camera on your laptop to record yourself speaking. Simply set yourself a time every day, sit down for ten minutes and talk to the camera about your day, or thoughts or something interesting you saw on the news.

The best thing about this is that if you keep the recordings you can actually see your progress over time from the first diary entry you do to the most recent one.

Talk English To Yourself

Now most people might think this is crazy but talking to yourself is a fantastic way to improve your English speaking ability if you’re in the house. If you want to practise speaking but there’s no one to talk to then there’s nothing wrong with talking to yourself.

If you’re not sure what to say then start off by talking about what you’re doing, for example if you’re making a drink you can say “I’m putting the kettle on and waiting for the water to boil.” Just doing this will help with your English fluency when you speak.

Try Singing In English

Instead of singing along to songs in your own language why not make the effort to learn some lyrics in English. Find some great English songs and sing along to them. If you do this the sounds in English will become much more familiar to you. And it will help you experience more English and American culture.

Ask Your Family Members To Speak English At Home

If you have family members or a partner who are also looking to improve their English then why not ask if they would like to try speaking English at home. They don’t have to do this all the time but at least one day a week or for one hour after school of work. If you did this and only spoke English during those times then yours and their English would improve dramatically. It might be difficult at first but if you can bring yourselves to do this it’ll definitely be worth it!

Hopefully some of these methods will be useful for you and hopefully we have been able to show you that you can learn to speak English at home, you just might need to work a little bit harder. You won’t be able to improve your English speaking skills fast, or at least as fast as if you were out and about in an English speaking world, but you should see improvements.

How To Improve English Speaking Skills

December 5, 2019 by Ana Martín Leave a Comment

how to improve english speaking skills

The Importance Of English Communication Skills

In the modern world, English communication skills are more important than ever before. English is the language of travel, of science, of work and more. If you want to improve your employability and have the freedom to travel anywhere then you need to learn English.

Having a good level of spoken English is one of the number one qualities employers look for, so we’re going to give you some tips on how to improve your speaking ability.

How To Improve English Speaking Skills

It’s not enough to just improve your English; you need to know HOW to improve English speaking skills.

  • The number one thing you need to do is speak English every single day. If you really want to improve, then you need to speak every day as much as possible. This is how you’re going to make the biggest improvements. If you don’t speak, then you won’t improve.
  • Find a language partner. It can be difficult to find opportunities to practise speaking and sometimes native English speakers can be impatient. So try and find a language partner who is learning as well and can help you. If you are studying in school you can see if there are any students who want to practise with you, or you can find language partners online. Italki is a great website to find language partners.
  • Try to speak about different topics. If you talk about the same sort of things over and over again then you’ll get very good at talking about them but you won’t really improve your speaking skills. Instead try to make the effort to talk about a variety of topics. You might find it difficult to talk about science at first, but the more you do this, the better you will get at it. It’s an important part of learning.

practise english without a partner

How To Learn Spoken English At Home Without A Partner

Sometimes when you want to practise English speaking, you might find that you don’t always have the opportunity and finding a partner can be difficult. But don’t worry! There are things you can do to practise English without a language partner.

  • Record yourself speaking English every day. Try to spend five-ten minutes a day minimum and speak into a recording device. Think of this like a verbal diary, talk about what you did during the day, what you ate who you saw and you’ll notice a difference after a few weeks.
  • Narrate what you do while you’re in the house (for example, talk about how you are making a meal)
  • Choose a book or movie and verbally review it to help you use different vocabulary. Or you can give a presentation about something. It might feel strange doing this to yourself but it will help a lot with using different types of vocabulary when speaking.
  • Use websites to find a language partner and speak to them from the comfort of your own home. Some great websites are: italki, conversationexchange and HelloTalk
  • Improve your writing skills. If you take the time to improve your writing skills, you’ll notice that your speaking skills get better as well. So consider keeping some kind of diary or writing essays that interest you. You can even get native speakers to check these for you and your overall grammar will also improve.

speaking confidently and fluently

How To Speak English Fluently And Confidently

It’s not just enough to improve your speaking ability in English, you also want to improve your fluency and confidence in order to have more advanced conversations and to speak better English. The more confident you are able to speak the more likely native speakers will be to converse with you.

Improving Fluency

Improving fluency comes with practise. In order to improve your fluency you need to be comfortable speaking in English, which means you have to speak in English a lot!

Our top tip for improving English fluency is you need to speak English every single day. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing or even if you just speak to yourself. If you want to improve your English fluency then you have to speak every day, as much as you can.

The more you speak, the more your fluency will improve.

Improving Confidence

One of the top tips we can give you to improve your confidence in English is: ‘don’t worry about mistakes.’ It’s ok if you can’t speak perfectly and even the best English speakers will make mistakes sometimes.

If you make a mistake but can still be understood then it’s not a problem. If you continue speaking you will come across as more confident with your English and you’ll feel more confident at the same time.

Improving Vocab

To improve your vocab when speaking English you need to use more complicated vocab. Most of the time when people speak, they only use 2000 words, because we don’t talk about complicated concepts every day.

If you want to improve your vocab while you speak then you need to learn new vocabulary and try to use it often. Which means you need to start talking about more complicated topics.

Instead of talking about movies, try to talk about politics, art or the environment so you can have a chance to use new vocabulary. The more you use it, the easier it will be for you to remember this new vocabulary.

  • You can use Anki or Memrise to learn new vocab fast
  • Expose yourself to programmes, documentaries and more where you’ll encounter new vocabulary
  • Then try to fit it into your conversations so you can practise using it

Just by following these steps, you will see your speaking skills improving day by day and will be on the way to linguistic success. You can’t get better overnight but by practising every single day, you’ll notice a huge difference in your English speaking skills. And as we’ve just mentioned, one of the most useful things you can do to improve your English oral skills is to try to talk about a varied range of topics and to practise using vocabulary and grammar structures that you wouldn’t necessarily use.
