Are Electronic Translator Devices Commonly Used?
Basically are you wanting to know if people are used to seeing these devices or are you going to pull one out try to use it and people are going to look at your like you’re strange or from the future?
The honest answer is that these devices aren’t being commonly used YET. And that is also depends on which country you’re in. Translator devices are definitely new to the language learning world but there are growing in popularity fast with more and more people beginning to use them.
When we first saw videos of electronic translators they looked like things from the future, with videos of bright eyes Japanese people looking shocked at this machine that was talking to them. But the initial novelty is beginning to wear off as we get more used to them and even start to buy them ourselves.
One interesting thing to note is that how popular these devices are can depend on which country you’re visiting. If you’re backpacking South America then you probably won’t encounter many of these. However, if you’re travelling through South Korea or Japan or the major cities in China you might find them more popular than you originally thought. Countries where tech is popular are more likely to adopt them much more quickly.
Even if they’re not commonly used in the country you’re going to and the people look at the machine with confusion at first, they’re going to understand what it is very quickly. Especially when you say something into one and it talks to them in their own language. They’ll realise very quickly what’s expected of them and they’ll also probably be excited to encounter such an interesting piece of technology that allows them to communicate so easily.
A benefit of electronic translators as they become more popular is that you’ll probably not need to buy one. If you go to certain countries where the devices are really popular then you’re likely to encounter people who already have one and you won’t need one yourself. However, if you’re country hopping and travelling around then it may be more necessary for you.
What Is Making Them More Common?
There are a couple of factors that are making electronic translators more common:
- One is cost. When they first came out they were incredibly expensive. Now as the technology becomes more used, the cost of these devices is decreasing which means that although you can still buy relatively expensive models, it’s now a lot easier to find cheaper ones too.
- Also they’re just more known about. The other main reason for why so many people now know about these translators is because they’re more commonly known about. Lots of travellers are buying them and testing them out and then talking about them. People have been making youtube videos about them. This all comes together to result in them being more popular and more commonly used.
But another big question that people have is how do electronic translators work?
